Epilepsy and seizure is a disease of the brain. It is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Epilepsy and seizure can vary widely but seizure doesn’t mean you have epilepsy. At least two unprovoked seizures are generally required for an epilepsy diagnosis. Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by two or more unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy and seizure affect both males and females of all races, backgrounds, and ages. A seizure is usually defined as a sudden alteration of behavior due to a temporary change in the electrical functioning of the brain. Some partial seizures are related to head injury, brain infection, stroke, or tumor but, in most cases, the cause is unknown. Epilepsy occurs as a result of abnormal electrical activity originating in the brain. Brain cells communicate by sending electrical signals in an orderly pattern.
