The peripheral nervous system includes 43 pairs of nerves that branch off from the central nervous system. Symptoms of nerve damage very greatly depending on the degree of injury. Mild symptoms include intermittent numbness or tingling of the affected extremity. More severe symptoms, which often require intervention, include severe persistent burning pain and sometimes complete loss of sensation and/or movement in the affected area.
